Maritime + Dockers

Shipping transports 90% of global trade across the world.  That is some 11 billion tons of goods are transported by ship each year.  Shipping’s capacity to transport goods and materials from where they are produced to where they are consumed is a feature of modern life. At the forefront of the regulation of shipping is the International Maritime Organization, an agency of the United Nations.

Civil Aviation

The civil aviation industry is a key component of the global transportation and logistics ecosystem, facilitating the movement of people and goods across continents and directly employing 11 million people globally. Aviation moves more than £5.5 trillion worth of goods annually, accounting for approximately 35% of world trade by value but less than 1% by volume. While vitally important, the global aviation workforce routinely works under a dangerous amount of stress and its safety practices are continually under worldwide scrutiny.

Railways

A critical component of global logistics, the rail transport industry moves 40% of global freight by weight. Already considered one of the most sustainable transport modes, rail is expanding in many parts of the world, including the Middle East & Africa, where investments in rail infrastructure are opening new railway corridors (e.g., Gulf Railway, Ethiopia-Djibouti).

Road Transportation

The road transport industry is the most widely used mode of transportation in the world, serving as the primary link in global logistics by connecting air, sea, and rail transport. Dominating the supply chain due to its flexibility, last-mile connectivity, and cost-effectiveness, road transport moves 60% of global freight. However, the road transport sector is undergoing significant economic, environmental, and technological changes, which present major challenges for workers. These challenges primarily relate to job security, working conditions, and environmental sustainability as governments and companies transition toward cleaner and more efficient transport systems.
